If you are new to this whole brushing your skin thing and you think it sounds a little nuts, bear with me.
First let me tell you what dry brushing is.
Dry brushing is quick and easy to incorporate into your daily self-care regimen. It’s exactly as it sounds, which may not sound appealing at first -- but trust me, it's kinda cool and oddly enjoyable.
Once you get started, it will be easier to understand why brushing your skin is an essential part of your self-care and skincare regime.
So you're literally brushing your skin with a natural and handmade jute brush. I can bet that not all are made equal.
The idea is to brush in circular motions, starting at your feet and working your way up, brushing towards the heart with light pressure, working up as you build tolerance.
The lymphatic system doesn't get enough love. Though, there are many ways to help improve our circulation, detoxification and elimination, the body works holistically and not one approach will work alone.
Dry brushing helps to move the lymphatic fluid; as does exercise, hot/cold water therapy treatments, sauna induced sweating, massage, and drinking water.
One of the said benefits is actually a feeling of invigoration. I have to admit, it's almost impossible to feel tired and groggy after. I usually feel pretty good, accomplished, and then I go on to apply my lotion and from there I find myself taking my vitamins and drinking more water.
It's just one of those things that motivates me to do all the other healthy things that will support my system. You know the things that I know that are good for me, but can sometimes be hard to check off that damn list.
We are detox machines
Our bodies are filtering out toxins all day, everyday. Our gut, livers, kidneys, lymph, all of it, are in overdrive because our environment and food aren't what they used to be, or should be, not even close. We don't HAVE to detox, our bodies do a good job, but our body needs the support. Because now more than ever, we are bombarded with chemical shit storms and a lot of mental crap and stress that is taxing our bodies too. Hi, isn't stress, the number one killer?
Our bodies CAN handle the pollution and toxins, but we suffer, big time! So we need to step up. A few simple swaps in our beauty products can make a difference, after all, our skin is our largest organ. How often do you hear that? Often, I bet, because it's true.
Tell me you feel perfect every damn day. That you're bursting with energy, excitement, drive, ambition; that you're having perfect poops, and you sleep 8-hours a night, that you're always a complete joy to be around; you have zero injuries and you never ever get sick. Oh and you don't drink booze.
Right. In our society today, I feel that collectively, we're all just running around listening to stories that we're told and trying to survive, some of us able to actually feel what it's like to thrive most of the time. There are definitely lots of people out there WHO GET IT.
It's hard to know what's what anymore.
Like, how did I actually believe for a period in my life, that breast implants wouldn't cause cancer or any health issues. I knew the surgery came with risks, but the implants themselves. I was either ignorant or brainwashed, or both.
This is my point, we believe that shit is okay. And it's NOT! So we have to educate ourselves and take care of ourselves.
HumanS are complicated
Humans are complicated. Our bodies are not.
If we eat clean, exercise, reduce our toxic exposure, avoid known carcinogens, take care of ourselves, we'll thrive. Not that easy.
We aren't bulletproof, we're going to die, and I think that most of us can agree, that that's not just solely based around how our bodies are operating or functioning. Sometimes good healthy (and happy!) people get handed a bad deck, so to speak.
We're not just physical bodies, we're emotional and spiritual beings as well. So although we can do all these things to detoxify our bodies, if we aren't emotionally and spiritually healthy or aware then we won't ever get the physical health that we all truly wish to achieve.
We all want to be healthy and feel great, even if we sabotage ourselves at times, or don't think we are worthy of truly having health. It's inherit to want to feel good. We are searching for it all the time.
Detox from trauma
I believe that most of what we need to detoxify from is the grief and trauma our bodies and cells are holding onto. Maybe from childhood, maybe early adolescence, maybe not even from this life time. Yup, I believe in past lives.
So dry brush all day long, but until you deal with the things that you need to deal with; and you may not even know yet, the dry brushing efforts won't do much, in my personal opinion.
Honestly though, talk therapy is amazing. It can really really really help realize and release a lot of the shit that you've been dragging around. TIME TO LET IT GO.
DETOX FROM MODERN SOCIETY
Then we have this insane modern world that's driving us to sickness - physically and mentally.
It's no surprise that most of what we consume and inhale is toxic. We aren't being protected; your milk isn't healthy, your mattress is off-gassing fumes, and your wifi is causing boatloads of issues.
But what are we to do? This is our society. We can fight, protest, complain on social media. The reality is, we are currently where we are. We have to adapt to it, we can't fight it. This is part of the evolution process. We are in the process.
So ya, I don't believe that our health is being supported. It truly is up to us, as individuals to look out for ourselves, and hopefully each other. This is why I share my passions, truths and wisdom; I want more for humanity as a collective.
I watched a documentary that pointed out what makes humans different. It was our ability to work together, to support, to share, to be creative. We can work together in large groups; collectively, we can be successful in ways that other mammals, and species can't and that's pretty damn cool.
But back to dry brushing, below I have listed 5 said reasons to dry brush.
5 BENEFITS + REASONS TO DRY BRUSH
Our skin is the largest organ and one where about 30 percent of detoxification takes place.
Dry brushing stimulates circulation and the lymphatic system – responsible for your immunity, toxin and waste elimination. Increasing skin circulation encourages lymphatic drainage, and therefore more effective and efficient detoxing, instead of stagnant toxins hanging out in your body – that’s what causes illness!
Dry brushing can help with breast health, by massaging the fat tissues in the breast. This helps to increase elimination of toxins that may be stuck in the fat tissues (bras are restricting!). Also remember to give some extra love to your underarms area, where major nymph node glands are (also focus on inner tights and base of neck).
Forget those weird shower gels with “exfoliating beads”, or as an alternate to body scrubs, dry brushing helps to slough off old, dead, and dry skin cells - encouraging unclogged, renewed, vibrant and smoother skin.
Increased blood flow throughout your whole body helps make you feel more energized and stimulated. You can also boost the energizing and detoxing effects of dry brushing with a hydrotherapeutic shower after, with a few rounds alternating between intervals of hot and cold water.
Reduces appearance of cellulite
Some claim that brushing helps to break down fat deposits and distributes them more evenly, helping to reduce the appearance of cellulite. It also helps frees trapped toxins so they can be eliminated. Hey, it doesn’t hurt to try!
HOW TO DRY BRUSH
I can't tell you to go get any dry brush because I haven't tried them all. But I'll tell you to get a good one, like the Merban all-natural jute one that I carry in my online shop.
I highly suggest doing this over the tub, or in the shower (before you start the water).
Start brushing from your feet in a circular motion moving upwards (legs, stomach, chest, arms, back, etc). Apply decent pressure (not too soft, but not too hard!)
Brush in a circular movement, clock-wise, and move towards the heart.
Brushing sessions can be anywhere from a couple of minutes, up to 10 minutes. Don’t worry, it’s normal to be a little pink when you’re done. Just think about all the activity happening!
You can do this on a daily basis. Best results come from a regular routine. After a few times, dry brushing won’t feel so abrasive, and can become relaxing practice.
That’s it! Continue with your normal showering routine then apply a super nourishing all-natural body oil or cream. I like this body butter.
SHOP NATURAL BEAUTY
Here are some of my favourite products from my online shop. Simple swaps and lifestyle changes go a long way. You don't need a million products, just good ones that actually work.

This is my favourite body brush. It's handmade with all-natural jute fibers. To improve your circulation, eliminate bodily toxins, contributes to better health, use this body brush every day.
KAIA NATURALS CHARCOAL DEODORANT
Switch to a natural deodorant ASAP. Those pores and glands are right next to your boobs and this area of your lymphatic system is very important and very sensitive. This one is new to my shop and I'm really liking it. It's also baking soda free, which is great for those of you with sensitivities.
GRAYDON ALL OVER FACE AND BODY LOTION
Stop using toxic lotions. Our skin is our largest organ and everything that we put on it, goes in us.
DR. BRONNERS CASTILE BAR SOAP
Just wash your pits and bits with a simple all natural soap. You don't need an expensive body wash. I use this castile soap in my shower and it lasts months. When I'm travelling I take the liquid version in the 30ml bottles.
